Choose a gift packaging
According to an article published in the press in 2017, The zero waste Canada organization has established that each Canadian throws an average of 50 kilos of garbage during the holidays. Over 540,000 tonnes of packaging paper and gift bags are thrown by Canadians each year. 1
Here are some basic notions to avoid producing too much waste.
- Reuse the gift bags from previous years or choose a container that can be reused.
- Use “paper” packaging paper. Be careful however, some papers are metallic or plastic and they are not accepted in the recycling tank. 2 Preferably use paper kraft which is more ecological to produce.
- Do not use decorative ribbons or cabbage because they do not recycle. Use Raffia or a jute rope that can be put in compostable materials. Decorate with a small branch of fir, a casserole dish recovered on the floor, dried flowers or slices of dehydrated oranges.
- Go soft with the adhesive tape because it contaminates the recycling of the paper. It is important to remove it before putting the paper or cardboard in the recycling tank.
- Do you know the furoshiki ? This is a Japanese technique to pack your gifts. The packaging is made in a piece of fabric which can be reused several times. It's really great because the packaging becomes a gift in itself!
Here is a video link that shows you how to pack a book according to the furoshiki : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4Hbew2Rg0E
We wish you responsible purchases, ecological packaging and a merry Christmas with family or friends!
