The name "phycocyanin" is derived from the Greek "phyco" meaning "algae" and "kyanos" which means "dark blue". Phycocyanin is the main component of spirulina extract. It is extracted from spirulina by centrifugation, filtered and dried. It is a vibrant blue pigment.
